Three Dutch spas compared: SpaWell, Thermen Holiday, Veluwse Bron

We at Favotrip have stayed at all three over the last eighteen months, SpaWell in Wellseind, Thermen Holiday in Nuland, and Veluwse Bron in Emst, all in the southern and central Netherlands. From the UK these are reachable via short flight to Amsterdam or Eindhoven plus an hour or so by car, or via Eurostar plus rental car if you prefer to drive in. None of the three is universally the best. That is exactly why we offer all three as their own package, wellness is personal enough that one formula does not fit. Here is what our editorial team learned, and which of the three packages suits which kind of weekend.
The biggest misunderstanding: it is not about sauna temperature
People choose a spa by counting saunas and checking temperatures. To us that is like choosing a restaurant by counting ovens. What actually makes the difference is the atmosphere in the relaxation rooms, the noise discipline of the other guests, the staff, and how the space flows. All three have plenty of sauna capacity; the difference sits elsewhere. At SpaWell the relaxation room between the saunas is light and white, with plain coffee and tea. Thermen Holiday goes for warm brown, low light, candles. Veluwse Bron has an outdoor sauna experience (proper Russian banya) that the other two do not. We suggest choosing on the atmosphere that calms you, not on technical specs, and that is precisely why we offer three different packages rather than one "best" one.
SpaWell , for slow and gradual
Wellseind, in the west of North Brabant, near Werkendam. The complex is small, two saunas, a steam room, two indoor pools and an outdoor pool. Staff greet you by name from your second visit, possible at this scale. Aufguss times are scheduled but the delivery is calmer than in larger thermal complexes, more ritual than show. You can eat downstairs at restaurant De Pauw, fine but not high-end, no Michelin claims. Our SpaWell package includes day pass, overnight and breakfast; we stayed here ourselves four times before adding it to the catalogue, and would book it again for a quiet two-day break with a partner. It is one of our personal favourites, not our biggest package, but one that scores consistently well in customer feedback.
Thermen Holiday , for the luxury seeker
Nuland, eastern Brabant, closer to 's-Hertogenbosch. Much larger than SpaWell, more than seven saunas, an outdoor pool, and a fairly extensive restaurant. The environment makes more of an impression: high ceilings, decorated walls, marble in the showers. For a first wellness visit it feels more impressive, which is precisely why we mainly recommend this package for couples who have not done a spa together before. The downside, honestly: it is busier, especially Saturdays and Dutch school holidays. We recommend midweek bookings in our package guidance for those wanting real quiet. Treatments are slightly pricier than at SpaWell, with a wider choice; in our package you can book treatments in advance, because on the day there is almost nothing left.
Veluwse Bron , for those who want to be outside
Strictly in the Veluwe region (Emst) rather than Brabant, but many of our customers across the southern Netherlands and beyond pick this one. What makes Veluwse Bron unique: a large outdoor area with proper Russian banya, a Finnish outdoor sauna, and a forest walk that starts on the spa grounds. For people who cannot relax in an enclosed indoor space (and this is a real type, we know several from our customer base) this is the option. Indoor facilities are fine but not exceptional. What works particularly well: Hotel Drenkeling, on the grounds, with forest views from every room. Our Veluwse Bron package pairs the day pass with this hotel, which we consider the most effortless format, because hotel check-in puts you straight onto the spa grounds.
Midweek vs weekend: the real difference
A wellness day on a Tuesday versus a Saturday is fundamentally different. Midweek: ten to fifteen percent of Saturday occupancy, no queue at Aufguss, empty loungers, relaxed staff. Saturday: full, busy, you sometimes wait at the steam room. We always suggest midweek in our package guidance, even though it feels a little like skiving. Not all couples can arrange it, but even a Sunday-into-Monday overnight makes the Sunday on site significantly quieter than a Saturday. In our package, midweek is often also better priced, without us having to negotiate, simply a different supply-demand curve.
When to book
For SpaWell and Thermen Holiday: three to four weeks ahead, earlier is unnecessary. For Veluwse Bron: four to six weeks ahead for weekends, because the hotel only has eighteen rooms. Avoid the week before and after any Dutch school holiday (dates are easy to look up online). Best period in our experience: second half of September, October, and late January, low occupancy, good outdoor sauna temperatures, and the woodland around Veluwse Bron in October is genuinely beautiful.
Why we offer three different packages
Some travel companies will sell you a single "wellness offer". We do not believe in that. Wellness for one person means a busy Aufguss with sweaty strangers, for another it is a private forest suite with no conversation, and you should not send both of those people to Thermen Holiday. So we have three packages with three different atmosphere profiles, instead of one with options. For each of the three we choose the hotel ourselves, arrange the day pass in advance, and bundle in breakfast. What booking separately does not give you: a single customer service, a single booking, a single party to call if something shifts.
Which package suits which guest
Couple, first wellness visit together: Thermen Holiday, for the impressive ambience. With a friend or your mother, talking quietly and recovering: SpaWell. With a partner or solo, wanting to be outside: Veluwse Bron. Birthday weekend with a group of four: Thermen Holiday because their private spa suites are best. Short stress-reduction weekend without fanfare: SpaWell, two nights, no treatments, just being. For those who can travel midweek: all three packages become quieter and better value. Below you will find the packages this article refers to, take a look at which one fits your weekend.
