Lille voelt als een stad die niet kan kiezen tussen Frans en Vlaams, en daar juist haar charme aan ontleent. Op de Grote Markt rijzen de kleurrijke gevels en het belfort op boven de terrasjes, terwijl in de smalle straatjes van Vieux-Lille de geur van versgebakken brood en moules zich met elkaar vermengt.
Het ritme is ontspannen. Een tweedehandsboek opduiken in de binnenhof van de Vieille Bourse, blijven hangen op een terras aan het Place du Theatre, of doelloos flaneren langs de Vlaamse pleinen tot het avondlicht de gevels goudkleurig maakt.
's Avonds licht het reuzenrad op de markt op en vullen de bistro's zich met gepraat en geklink. Lille laat zich het best beleven zonder strak programma, gewoon meedrijven met de stad.

Redeemed the voucher, Lille it was. Arrived on a Tuesday, three easy days. Dinner in a small bistro near Place du Général de Gaulle. Bed was a touch soft. Whole package via Favotrip, no separate bookings. Recommended for the 55+ crowd.
Family with kids (10 and 13) · 2 nights
Three options on the voucher, picked Brussels for the ease with the kids. Package including hotel and Thalys sorted in one go. Climbed the Atomium, Grand Place in the evening, a quick chocolatier tour for the kids. Family room was a bit noisy through the walls. We'll be back.
Couples of friends · 3 nights
Vouchers redeemed together, picked Lille. Eurostar from London, hotel in the centre, two double rooms. Big mussel dinner on Place Rihour, four bottles of rosé later everyone was happy. Sunday at the LaM for modern art, didn't expect it to be that good. No hotel parking, garage three streets away.

Redeemed the voucher together, Brussels it was. Eurostar from London, hotel in Saint-Gilles. Friday Grand-Place, Saturday Magritte. Flea market in Marolles Sunday morning, my friend found two vinyl records. Hotel breakfast was light, two types of bread and a bowl of fruit. I always underestimate Brussels' café culture.

Voucher offered Frankfurt, Lille or Brussels, picked Frankfurt for the Apfelwein tour. Flight from London in the package, hotel by the main station. Station district was noisy in the evening, hadn't factored that in. Römerberg beautiful by day, Sachsenhausen for the wine. Recommended, but don't book a room facing the street.

Voucher gave three options: Frankfurt, Lille, Brussels. Lille won, Eurostar from London included. Walked Vieux-Lille, terrace on Place du Théâtre. Hotel in the centre, room with a narrow balcony. Café culture in Flemish style, chips with andalouse sauce. Bistro brought the wrong menu once, quickly corrected. Recommended.
