Germany's second city, its largest port, its most varied neighbourhoods. Quicker to reach and more sentimental than Berlin. Not for city-breakers who only want churches and palaces.
A 47-hectare city park north of the centre, free to enter. A Japanese garden, tropical glasshouses and, in summer, water-and-light shows on the pond at dusk. An hour's stroll between the sightseeing, perfect for catching your breath.
The glass concert hall set atop an old warehouse base. The Plaza, 37 metres up, is free to reach via a long escalator running through the building. A 360-degree view over the harbour, the city and the Elbe. Lovely just before sunset.
The largest model railway in the world, in an old warehouse on the Kehrwiederspitze. Entire continents in miniature, with a day-night cycle and an airport where the planes really take off. Surprisingly good fun even without children in tow, so allow a couple of hours.
Every Sunday morning from 5am to 9am (until 9.30am from June to October). Fishmongers holler out their wares while small bands play in the Fischauktionshalle. Treat yourself to a Fischbrötchen-and-beer breakfast. Do not wear your best jacket, and get there ahead of the hashtag tourists.

Took the ICE from Utrecht to Hamburg on a package, the evening cruise was included, nothing extra to book. Walked through Speicherstadt in the afternoon before the cruise. Reeperbahn afterwards for the atmosphere. Wall between rooms was thin. Happy to do this again.

Arrived Tuesday, properly quiet. Package with the evening cruise included, hotel and boat were already linked. The cruise itself was well run, not crowded onboard. In-room coffee was instant. Good pick if you want a sorted city break away from the crowds.

Four of us booked a Hamburg package with the evening cruise included, all set in advance. Friday we did the inside of the Elbphilharmonie, Saturday morning Fischmarkt and onboard in the evening. Parking was pricier than expected. Doing it again next year.

Booked a Hamburg package with the kids (7 and 10), evening cruise and hotel both included. Family room with bunk beds was roomy. The kids loved sailing past HafenCity and Speicherstadt. Walked the Reeperbahn afterwards for the atmosphere. TV remote only half worked. We'll be back.

Booked the Hamburg package with the evening cruise included, everything sorted in one go. Hotel was walking distance from the Landungsbrücken, smooth check-in. Sailing past HafenCity and Speicherstadt in the evening light was a highlight. Plenty of daytime to wander the city. Mattress creaked when turning. Solid pick if you want a sorted city break.

The largest warehouse complex in the world, a UNESCO site since 2015. Wander through it at a leisurely pace, especially around dusk when the yellow lamps come on. Stop at Café Wasserschloss for a generous German breakfast by the water.
An infamous red-light district and a nightlife strip all at once. Go after eleven at night, as it looks shabby by day. At Klubhaus St. Pauli, six floors of music sit under one roof. Quiet on Sundays, full of Hamburgers and few tourists on the other days.
