Solo Maastricht, castle included
Drove to Maastricht, package included Hoensbroek Castle entry. Took the castle at my own pace, then the Bonnefanten Museum. Blind didn't fully close. Worked well for me, I'd book again.

The southernmost city in the Netherlands, Roman in origin and Burgundian in character. It feels more European than any other Dutch city.
The central square, loved for its terraces and the two churches standing side by side. The Servatius Basilica has a treasury of medieval relics well worth seeing. On summer evenings, live music often drifts across the square.
A former marl quarry with thirty kilometres of tunnels, which can only be visited with a guide. Inside it is always eleven degrees, so bring a jumper. Combine it with a walk over the hill, as the view across the Jeker valley is lovely.
A Gothic church from 1294, a bookshop since 2007. Steel shelving climbs up along the old vaults. It is regularly voted one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. At the back there is a coffee bar set into the old altar, free to wander into.

A bakery inside a watermill from 1196, the oldest working mill in the Benelux. Classic Limburg vlaai baked in a stone oven. Ask for the apricot or gooseberry version, as they are more local than the well-known cherry vlaai. Lovely to take along for the journey.
A modern silhouette on the bank of the Meuse, designed by Aldo Rossi. Early Italian and Flemish masters on the ground floor, contemporary art above. The combination works surprisingly well. Allow about three hours if you want to look round at your leisure.
A narrow street full of cafés where the local Maastricht crowd gathers. A good beer selection including the local Brand, plus simple and honest food. From around seven it fills up quickly here, so settling in early or being patient is part of it.
