Cologne, the vibrant city on the Rhine, is the perfect destination for an unforgettable city trip. Whether you are drawn to ancient history, bustling culture, charming shopping streets, or hidden gems: there is always something to experience in Cologne.
A visit to Cologne is not complete without admiring the impressive Cathedral. This Gothic masterpiece has towered over the city for centuries and offers a spectacular view of the Rhine and the skyline from its tower. Art and history lovers can indulge themselves at the Museum Ludwig, with its impressive collection of modern art, or at the Roman-Germanic Museum, where unique archaeological finds from antiquity can be seen.
Don’t miss the atmospheric Old Town either. Here, you can stroll through narrow streets filled with traditional houses, cozy squares, and snug breweries where you can taste a local Kölsch beer. The Rhine promenade is the ideal spot for a relaxing walk along the water, with views of the bridges and the city that never seems to stand still.
For a touch of modernity, visit the trendy Rheinauhafen district, where old warehouses have been transformed into a vibrant area full of art, design, and gastronomy. The iconic Kranhäuser are a striking highlight along the river. Shopping enthusiasts can head to Schildergasse and Hohe Straße, two of the busiest shopping streets in Germany, where international brands and local boutiques alternate.
A city that is easy to reach by car. Known for its cathedral, its Kölsch beer and a carnival that lasts six days.
Two towers of 157 metres, begun in 1248 and not completed until 1880. The 533 steps to the top are a tough climb, but the view over the Rhine and the whole city makes it worthwhile. It is quietest early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Right next to the cathedral, one of the most important pop art collections in Europe. Plenty of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, plus Picasso works created in the museum itself. Two hours is enough, open until 10pm on Thursdays.
A classic beer hall in the centre where the waiter (the Köbes) keeps topping up your glass until you place the beer mat on top. Order a Mettbrötchen too, raw minced pork on a roll, if you want to do it like a true local.
From the cathedral, walk across the railway bridge to the far bank of the Rhine. The railing is covered in love locks, the heaviest railing in Europe. On the other side you will find cafés with terraces and the best view back towards the cathedral.

A district west of the centre, full of vintage shops, small designers and coffee bars. Far cheaper and livelier than the Schildergasse shopping street. Especially worth it on a Saturday, quieter from Tuesday to Friday.
On the far bank of the Rhine, reachable via the Hohenzollern Bridge or the KölnTriangle tower, which has a lift up to the roof. The sun sets behind the silhouette of the cathedral, with the best timing between May and September.
