What to do in Keulen
A city that is easy to reach by car. Known for its cathedral, its Kölsch beer and a carnival that lasts six days.
Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom)
Two towers of 157 metres, begun in 1248 and not completed until 1880. The 533 steps to the top are a tough climb, but the view over the Rhine and the whole city makes it worthwhile. It is quietest early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Museum Ludwig
Right next to the cathedral, one of the most important pop art collections in Europe. Plenty of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, plus Picasso works created in the museum itself. Two hours is enough, open until 10pm on Thursdays.
Kölsch beer at Päffgen
A classic beer hall in the centre where the waiter (the Köbes) keeps topping up your glass until you place the beer mat on top. Order a Mettbrötchen too, raw minced pork on a roll, if you want to do it like a true local.
Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke)
From the cathedral, walk across the railway bridge to the far bank of the Rhine. The railing is covered in love locks, the heaviest railing in Europe. On the other side you will find cafés with terraces and the best view back towards the cathedral.

Drove to Cologne on a package, Aqualand was included, nothing extra to book. Spent a few hours at the water park in the afternoon. Kölsch at Päffgen afterwards. Blackout blind didn't fully close. Happy to do this again.

Four of us booked a Cologne package with Aqualand included, everything in one booking. Climbed the Dom first (533 steps), then into the water park in the afternoon. Walked the Hohenzollernbrücke with the love locks in the evening. In-room coffee was instant. Doing it again next year.

Booked the Cologne package with the kids (5 and 8), Aqualand was included. Family room with bunk beds helped. The 14 slides were a hit with the kids. Tried Kölsch at Päffgen in the evening. Parking pricier than expected. We'll be back.
