Not a city for lovers of old facades, but very much one for fans of modern architecture. Plus the best digital art hall in the Netherlands.
On the Willemsplein. A combination of digital projections and surround sound, with rotating exhibitions. Allow a couple of hours, and you will often leave with more questions than answers about what you have just seen. Early in the day it is quieter, before the school groups arrive.
The boulevards on both banks give the best view of the skyline. Walk from the Erasmus Bridge towards the Hotel New York on the Wilhelminakade. The light over the container ships and the high-rises is at its most photogenic in the late afternoon. There are plenty of spots to stop along the way.
A five-minute walk from one another. The Markthal for lunch (the Italian focaccia at Bertmans has been there since day one), the Cube Houses for the photo. One of the cube houses can be viewed from the inside, smaller than you would think, but a surprising space to walk through.

Drove to Rotterdam, booked the package with Euromast access. Up top alone with a coffee, surprisingly nice in the quiet. Markthal for lunch after. In-room coffee was instant, easy fix outside. Will do this again.

Arrived Tuesday, less of a wait at the Euromast. Access was in the package, stood at the top with a coffee, no rush. Walked Kop van Zuid and Hotel New York otherwise. City parking pricier than thought. Good pick for a tidy city break.

Rotterdam package for the four of us, Euromast was in the bundle. Took group photos at the top, Erasmusbrug looks different from up there. Dinner at Hotel New York in the evening. TV remote half-worked, no big deal. Doing it again next year.

Booked the Rotterdam package, the Euromast was included and it was our first stop, the kids (8 and 11) couldn't wait. Markthal for lunch after. Family room with bunk bed really helped. Mattress creaked a bit at night. Definitely coming back.

The liveliest street in the city for a terrace and an evening meal. No tourist circus, mostly a local crowd. On a Friday evening it fills up quickly from six o'clock, so booking a table is no unnecessary luxury, or come early for a beer at the bar.
An old harbour warehouse in Katendrecht, converted into a food hall with eight local producers under one roof. Artisanal cheeses, a slow pace, its own brewery. There is live music on Sundays. Walk there across the Erasmus Bridge for the best view on the way.
A lift up to 100 metres, with a revolving floor at the top. Best timing: an hour before sunset, when the skyline starts to glow. The restaurant at the top is on the pricey side, but a cocktail at the bar is more than worth it for the view.
