Amsterdam in miniature, but without the red-light district. Wharf cellars right at canal level, a cathedral tower you climb before you have had your coffee, and local pubs where the real Utrechters spend their evenings.
112 metres, 465 steps. You go up with a guide who knows every anecdote about the central nave that collapsed in 1674. Early in the morning there are few crowds and the view over the city is at its sharpest, on a clear day you can see far beyond the city limits.
Unique to Utrecht: cellars right at the water's edge, once used for handling goods. Many are now restaurants and bars. Pop into Oud Hollandsch IJs (homemade since 1953) or duck underground at one of the coffee bars for a quiet moment away from the bustle.
A green ribbon of parkland and water runs around the old centre, completely redesigned in 2020. Walk the full loop in an hour from the Bemuurde Weerd, or simply settle in at a terrace café. In summer especially the mood here is busy but relaxed.

Booked the Utrecht family package, De Haar Castle entry was included. The castle at Haarzuilens went down well with the kids (11 and 14). Family room with bunk beds really helped. Also walked the Oudegracht with its wharf cellars. Breakfast ended too early. We'll be back.

Known for its Dick Bruna room, as the illustrator of Nijntje (Miffy) worked here his whole life. It also holds the largest collection of Rietveld furniture in the world. Two hours is plenty. Lovely to combine with a stroll to the Rietveld-Schröder House, just five minutes away.
In the old Tivoli cinema near the Vredenburg. High ceilings, bare concrete, twelve food stalls run by different owners. The Korean fried chicken at Seoul Sister is, in our view, the best in the city. Friday and Saturday evenings are when it gets busiest.
Independent shops: records at Plato, local designers in the side streets, and the Steven Sterk bookshop, in the same spot since 1971. Walk up from the Twijnstraat towards the Oudegracht and on to the Neude. An hour or two slips by here easily.
