The rolling hill country of Limburg. Marl caves beneath your feet, vineyards above your head. An easy short trip away, yet the scale feels distinctly French.
The ruins look out over the centre, thirteen centuries old. Below lies the Fluweelengrot with its clandestine church from the French era. On Sundays there are guided tours in the Limburg dialect, all the more fun if you cannot follow a word. Bring sturdy shoes for the cave itself.
Along the Daalhemerweg, old marl tunnels run beneath the hills, dotted with sculptures and traces of earlier inhabitants. Inside it is always eleven degrees, so bring a jacket. Afterwards, a Limburg Trappist on the terrace of Café De Trip makes for a fine resting point.
On the Daalhemerweg. Owner Frank is happy to explain what the marl soil does to the flavour. Unexpected: just fifty kilometres from the Belgian border, a rather lovely Pinot Gris grows here. Combine it with a walk through the surrounding vineyards.

Booked the hotel + Thermae 2000 package and drove down to Valkenburg myself. Did the thermal bath at my own pace, lovely. Popped into the velvet caves afterwards. The neighbour above was up early. Felt good, I'll do it more often.

Arrived on a Tuesday, nicely quiet. Hotel + Thermae 2000 package means no planning needed. We took the saunas slowly, popped into town in between. Shower dripped audibly at night. For midweek dates this is a solid option.

Four of us booked the Valkenburg package, Thermae 2000 entry was included, saved the queue at the desk. Walked up the Cauberg, then a long afternoon in the thermal bath. Bathroom tap dripped one night. Doing the same again next year.

Booked the package with hotel + Thermae 2000, saves piecing it together yourself. Family room with bunk beds, worked well. We did the sauna while the kids stayed near the velvet caves with grandma. Lovely view over the Geul valley. Breakfast ended at 9, a bit tight with small kids. We'll be back.

Booked the package with hotel + Thermae 2000 entry, nice having it all in one booking. Spent the whole afternoon in the panoramic sauna overlooking the Geul valley. Hotel room was tidy, heating wouldn't turn down so we cracked the window. Generous breakfast. Recommended for a sorted wellness weekend.

A cycling route of around 28 kilometres through six wineries between Wahlwiller and Eys. Domein de Wijngaardsberg and Hoeve Nekum offer a short tour by appointment. Halfway along, at Vue d'Eys, lunch with a view over the hills. For the well-trained cyclist, as there is plenty of climbing.
From the market square, a quarter of an hour on foot takes you to the top of the Cauberg, the climb from the Amstel Gold Race. No Tour-worthy feat without a bike, but a fine view over the Geul valley all the same. Loveliest around sunset, when the light spills across the hills.
On the Berkelstraat. Four generations in the same kitchen. The apricot vlaai with its pastry rim is, as far as we are concerned, the best in Limburg. Open Friday to Sunday, and come early, because the most sought-after vlaai sell out somewhere over the course of the morning.
