Budapest is two cities in one: Buda with its historic Castle District on the hillside, and Pest with the Parliament, the Great Market Hall and the thermal baths that define the city.
Állatkerti körút 11, City Park (Metro M1 to Széchenyi Fürdő). A 1913 neo-Baroque palace with outdoor and indoor pools. Buy tickets online in advance to skip the queue; a day ticket costs around 25 euros. Arrive before 10 when the outdoor pools are almost empty and steam still hangs thick over the yellow facades.
Szentháromság tér, Buda (cross the Chain Bridge into Buda, then 20 minutes uphill on foot or by lift). Eight white towers with the best panorama over the Danube and Pest. The terrace is free, the raised viewing platform has an entry fee. Before 9 the Castle District is almost tourist-free.
Vámház körút 1-3, 500 metres from Ferenciek tere. A three-storey covered market hall built in 1896. Ground floor: fresh vegetables, sausages and foie gras. Upper level: lángos (deep-fried bread with sour cream and cheese, around 4 euros) and Hungarian souvenirs. Saturdays are the busiest but also the liveliest.

Kazinczy utca 14 (Szimpla Kert) and Gozsdu udvar, 7th District, 1 km from the Chain Bridge. Bars in half-ruined courtyards with makeshift furniture and fairground aesthetics. Szimpla Kert is the most famous; Fogas Ház at Akácfa utca 51 is larger and slightly less crowded. Weekdays are lively without the Friday and Saturday queues.
Kossuth Lajos tér, 1.5 km from the Chain Bridge. The neo-Gothic building on the riverbank is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world. English guided tours available; book on the official website in advance. The evening lighting reflects in the Danube and is the finest light display in Budapest. Best side-angle view from the Fisherman's Bastion in Buda.
Széchenyi lánchíd, the bridge connecting Pest and Buda. Walk the Dunakorzó promenade in Pest from the Elizabeth Bridge to the Margaret Bridge: 4 km along the water with views of the Castle District and Parliament. Early morning or late evening there are almost no other visitors. The bridge itself, reopened after renovation, is spectacular when lit at night.
