Poland offers a rich mix of historic city centres, mountain spa in the Tatras and health resorts on the Baltic coast. Hotel clusters are spread across Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk and the mountain villages in the south.
Rynek Główny, Kraków (5 minutes walk from the Kraków hotel cluster in the city centre). The largest market square in Poland, surrounded by merchant houses and the Gothic St Mary's Basilica. Every hour an unfinished trumpet call sounds from the church tower, a tradition dating back to the Mongol invasion of 1241. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish Quarter, is 15 minutes walk to the south.
Rynek (market square), Wrocław (5 minutes walk from the Wrocław hotel cluster). The most colourful market square in Poland, with pastel merchant houses. More than 300 bronze miniature figures (dwarfs) are hidden across the city; the largest concentration runs along Świdnicka Street. Free to find, no guide needed. The Gothic cathedral on Cathedral Island is 20 minutes walk from the centre.
Daniłowicza 10, Wieliczka, 15 km south of Kraków (shuttle from Kraków Główny station in 25 minutes, also reachable by Uber). Underground UNESCO World Heritage Site: a network of tunnels, ornately carved chapels and statues in salt rock. The most famous chamber is the Chapel of St Kinga, 54 metres underground. Tours last 2 to 3 hours; in peak season online advance booking is required.
Krupówki main street, Zakopane (2 hours drive south of Kraków). The wooden highland architecture gives the shopping street a unique character. Lake Morskie Oko in the Tatras is reachable by collective taxi in 30 minutes then a 30-minute walk. In winter the ski slopes at Kasprowy Wierch are reachable by gondola. Wellness hotels and thermal spas are found along Jagiellońska Street.
Pierogarnia Pod Baranem, ul. Świętosław 22, Kraków (10 minutes walk from Rynek Główny), or Restauracja U Babci Maliny, ul. Sawicza 10, Kraków. Filled dumplings with potato and white cheese (ruskie), sauerkraut and mushrooms or meat; a portion of 8 to 12 pieces costs around 5 to 8 euros. Pierogi are on the menu of every Polish restaurant. In local restaurants, cash (Polish zloty) is the normal way to pay.
Długi Targ (Long Market), Gdańsk (15 minutes walk from the Gdańsk hotel cluster). The most photogenic street in Gdańsk: a straight avenue of reconstructed brick Hanseatic merchant houses. The Neptune Fountain stands in the centre. The Museum of the Second World War (advance booking recommended) is 10 minutes walk away. In summer, Sopot, 15 minutes by train, is the beach resort for the Tri-City.
