Reims is an elegant and enchanting city where history, champagne, and French charm come together seamlessly. Known as the capital of the Champagne region, the place where French kings were crowned and home to world-famous champagne houses, Reims exudes a unique blend of grandeur, culture, and refinement. Thanks to its central location in Northern France, it is the ideal destination for a relaxing city trip filled with flavor and discoveries.
Upon arrival, you feel it immediately: Reims radiates a timeless beauty. Stroll along stately boulevards, admire the impressive architecture, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that buzzes throughout the city. At the beautiful Place Royale and in the historic city center, you will find iconic buildings such as the majestic Notre-Dame de Reims, where kings have been crowned for centuries. The nearby basilica of Saint-Remi and the Palais du Tau are also true gems that take you through French history.
Culture and craftsmanship enthusiasts will find their hearts' desires here. Wander through museums like the Musée des Beaux-Arts or explore the historic cellars of champagne houses such as Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, or Pommery. Beneath the city lies a fascinating network of ancient chalk cellars, a hidden world where millions of champagne bottles are aging, and where you can experience the magic of craftsmanship up close during guided tours.
And of course, Reims is also about enjoyment. The city is bursting with cozy brasseries, stylish bistros, and modern restaurants where you can savor the refined French cuisine, always perfectly paired with a sparkling glass of champagne. Whether you come for culture, history, gastronomy, or simply a weekend full of luxury and relaxation, Reims welcomes you with open arms and a sparkling smile.
Capital of the Champagne region, just an hour and a half from Paris by TGV. This is where you find the vineyards that produce the overwhelming majority of all the champagne in the world. And it is not only about the wine, there is also a Gothic cathedral where 25 French kings were crowned.
This cathedral has stood here since 1211 and has been a UNESCO site since 1991. The coronation church of 25 French kings, including Charles VII in 1429 with Joan of Arc at his side. Entry is free. The Chagall stained-glass windows behind the altar date from the 1960s and are lovelier than you might expect.
Beyond the famous names like Mumm and Veuve Clicquot lies a network of smaller family producers in the villages around Reims. The atmosphere is homelier and the explanations more personal. Many houses round off the midday with a local Brie and a glass, ideal for a relaxed half day.
The archbishop's palace beside the cathedral. This is where the kings stayed before their coronation. You will find sculptures from the cathedral, the coronation cloak of Charles X, and tapestries from the 1500s. Allow around an hour and a half. It pairs nicely with a climb up the cathedral tower.
A quarter of an hour's drive from Reims. Two hours of walking through the rolling vineyards at Verzenay, the so-called montagne de Reims. Finish at the Phare de Verzenay, a viewing tower shaped like a lighthouse, once built by a winegrower for his wife.
Half an hour from Reims, the heart of the Champagne region. The Avenue de Champagne is a street full of grandeur, with the facades of Mercier, Pol Roger and De Castellane lined up one after another. Stroll along it at your leisure, step inside for a tasting, or grab a table on a terrace at the far end.
On the Rue Camille Lenoir. The pink sugar biscuits you dip into champagne to enjoy their lightness. On the market since 1756, the oldest biscuit maker in France. A lovely gift to take home. You can pay a short visit to their production workshop, brief and interesting.
