In summer, Austria is a paradise for families. Crystal-clear and surprisingly warm water in the alpine lakes, cable cars that whisk you up into the mountains and mountain villages full of ice cream parlours and playgrounds. Whether your children want to swim, climb or spot cows on the alpine pasture, they will not be bored for a single moment here.
The Wörthersee is one of the warmest alpine lakes in Austria, with water that easily reaches around 25 degrees in summer. All around the lake there are lovely beaches and swimming spots, with shallow water where the little ones can safely paddle. Hire a pedal boat or simply dive in off the jetty. Towns such as Velden and Pörtschach make an ideal base.
The Salzkammergut is the lake district par excellence, with the Wolfgangsee and the Hallstätter See as its true gems. The village of Hallstatt sits like a picture postcard against the mountainside at the water's edge. Take the children to the oldest salt mine in the world, where you slide down on a real miners' slide. A boat trip across the Wolfgangsee rounds off the day perfectly.
You do not have to climb for hours to enjoy the view. All across Tyrol and the Salzburg region, cable cars take you up to the mountain peaks in just a few minutes. At the top you will find easy walking trails, high-altitude playgrounds and mountain restaurants with a large terrace. The Achensee in Tyrol and the mountains around Seefeld are perfect for a relaxed family walk with spectacular views.

Zell am See sits beautifully on a lake with the mountains rising right behind it, and it is a top spot for swimming and cycling. Nearby lies Kaprun, where the glacier railway takes you up the Kitzsteinhorn. There you will find snowfields even in the middle of summer, so the children can have a snowball fight in July. Along the way you can stop at the impressive reservoirs high up in the mountains.
With its historic old town and the Hohensalzburg fortress, Salzburg makes a pleasant change from all that outdoor life. A small cable car takes you up to the castle, where you look out over the city. Walk past Mozart's birthplace and stroll through the narrow streets full of little shops. It combines well with a day at the Wolfgangsee, which lies close by.
Nothing is more Austrian than a walk up to an alpine pasture, where free-roaming cows with bells around their necks stand in the meadow. At many mountain huts you can enjoy fresh milk, cheese and home-baked cake. And for the real speed demons: almost every mountain village has a summer toboggan run on which you whizz down through the bends in a little cart. Screams and laughter guaranteed for young and old alike.
