Southern Germany is a dream destination for families who love water, nature and adventure. Between the clear mountain lakes, the green hills of the Black Forest and the high Alpine peaks, there is something for every child to enjoy. Swimming, hiking, exploring castles or a day at a theme park: you decide for yourself how to fill your week.
Lake Constance (the Bodensee) is the largest lake in Germany and has wonderful lakeside lidos with shallow water where children can safely paddle and swim. Many spots have grassy lawns, playgrounds and boat hire. On a warm summer's day the water is surprisingly pleasant and you can step straight from the shore into the lake.
King Ludwig II's castle sits high on a mountain near Füssen and looks as though it has stepped straight out of a storybook. From the Marienbrücke you get the finest view of the white towers. Tip: book your tickets in advance and plan the walk up, as children often find the horse-drawn carriage the highlight.
Europa-Park is the largest theme park in Germany and lies right beside the Black Forest. With roller coasters for the daredevils and gentler rides for the little ones, you can easily spend a whole day here. The different country-themed areas make a circuit of the park feel almost like a little journey in itself.

The Black Forest is famous for its dense pine woods, its waterfalls and its celebrated cuckoo clocks. Visit the Triberg Waterfalls, among the highest in Germany, or watch in Triberg how a real cuckoo clock is made. Along the way you will find plenty of cosy villages for a slice of Black Forest gateau (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte).
Around the Allgäu and the Bavarian lakes, cable cars carry you effortlessly high into the mountains. At the top you will find easy walking trails, exciting discovery routes and views across the lakes and peaks. At the Tegelbergbahn or the Nebelhornbahn, the children will be delighted by the view too.
The island town of Lindau lies in the middle of Lake Constance and has a charming harbour with its well-known lion statue and lighthouse. A little further along is Konstanz, with narrow lanes, waterside terraces and the boat to the flower island of Mainau. Perfect places to take things a little more slowly after all the swimming and hiking.
