The north of Spain is a surprisingly green side of the country, with sandy beaches, rolling hills and mountains that seem to tumble straight into the sea. For families there is plenty to enjoy: paddling and building sandcastles, a surf lesson in the waves, or a day out at a water park. And in between, the coastal towns serve up genuine Spanish atmosphere, with tapas and pintxos on a sunny terrace.
The city beach of La Concha in San Sebastián (Donostia) curves like a golden arc around a sheltered bay and is ideal for children. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for paddling and building sandcastles. From the promenade you can stroll straight to an ice cream or a café terrace. A real recommendation for easing gently into your first holiday day.
In San Sebastián and Bilbao the bar counters are piled high with pintxos, small Basque bites served on a stick or a slice of bread. For children it is a treat to pick out from the counter whatever looks good. You simply point to what you want and settle up at the end. A lovely and affordable way to eat as a whole family.
Around Santander and along the Cantabrian coast lie wide beaches with fine waves, ideal for learning to surf. On beaches such as Somo and Loredo, surf schools give lessons to children from about eight years old. Anyone who prefers to stay dry can build sandcastles or hunt for shells. It is greener and fresher here than in the south, wonderful in summer.

Asturias is one of the greenest regions of Spain, with the striking mountains of the Picos de Europa rising just behind the coast. At the lakes of Covadonga you can take a short walk with a magnificent view, a short drive from the beaches. Along the way you will see cows in the meadows and babbling little rivers. A lovely change of pace during a beach week for the whole family.

In Roses and around the Rías Baixas in Galicia you can wander along the harbour and watch the boats. The coastal paths, known in Catalonia as the camins de ronda, lead past hidden beaches.
